Championship opening weekend 2026/27: every fixture and what the data already says
The Championship returns on Friday 14 August, Wolves against Blackburn under the lights, and runs through to a Monday night Welsh derby between Cardiff and Wrexham. Our model's settled record holds a spring read on 21 of the 24 clubs involved. Fixture by fixture, here is what the data carries into the opening weekend, and where it is honestly blind.
The 2026/27 Championship opens on Friday 14 August with Wolves at home to Blackburn, 8pm at Molineux. Twelve fixtures run through to Cardiff against Wrexham on Monday 17 August, every one live on Sky Sports+. Our model's settled record carries a spring read on 21 of the 24 clubs; the three it cannot see are the ones coming down from the Premier League.

"Flagged" means our 8-factor model made that club the predicted winner of a scored fixture in its settled spring record; "2 of 2" means both calls were correct. Full method in how the conviction score works.
Burnley v West Ham: the weekend's biggest fixture is the model's blind spot
The consensus headline act is Sunday at Turf Moor, and the honest data note is that our model enters it with nothing. West Ham, Wolves and Burnley all arrive from the Premier League, so the record holds no factor profiles on any of them, and their first conviction reads will only firm up once Championship matches are played. Burnley at least resolved their bench before it: Nicky Hayen was appointed on 10 July on a three-year deal, ending the longest managerial search in the division, and this is his first competitive fixture in English football. The consensus rates these two among the division's strongest sides, West Ham clearest of all; the season-long picture, including why the model starts them unscored, is in the Championship 2026/27 season preview.
Middlesbrough v Lincoln: the strongest data fixture of the weekend
Saturday's 3pm at the Riverside is the game where the record has real weight on both sides, and Sky's fixture notes add that it is the clubs' first meeting since 1961. Lincoln arrive as League One champions with a perfect spring record in our data: flagged twice, average conviction 7.2, both won. Middlesbrough closed last season as beaten play-off finalists and were flagged three times at 6.2 average, winning two with one drawn. Promoted champions away at a side that just missed out is the classic early-season trap fixture in both directions, and this one carries more settled data than any other game on the opening card.
Cardiff v Wrexham: a Monday derby and the record's highest club read
The all-Wales closer brings the number the record is proudest of and the caveat that keeps it honest. Cardiff were flagged three times in the League One run-in at an average conviction of 7.5, the highest club read anywhere in our EFL record, topping out at 7.8 in a fixture they won 5-1. Two of the three calls landed; the miss was a 5-4 defeat at Mansfield that remains the loudest single result in the record. The caveat is plain: those numbers come from a division below, and a Monday night derby against Wrexham, whose two flags produced one win and one draw at 4.3 average, is not a League One fixture. The model will re-learn Cardiff at Championship level from this game onwards.
What the rest of the record says, game by game
Friday night carries an odd shape: Blackburn's own two flags both failed, yet their best spring result came unflagged, a 3-1 away win at Sheffield United when the model had scored the home side 6.3. New head coaches stand in both dugouts, Cesar Peixoto at Wolves and Tony Mowbray back at Blackburn, so continuity factors start thin here regardless.
On Saturday, Bolton against Preston is a promoted side the model kept calling correctly at low conviction, 3 of 4 at just 4.8 average, against a Preston side it twice flagged and twice watched fail. Sheffield United against Birmingham at 5.30pm is the fixture for anyone who wants the model's misses on display: Sheffield United's two flags averaged 6.0 and neither landed, while Birmingham quietly went 2 of 2 from 5.0. Portsmouth's profile is the reverse of Sheffield United's, three low-conviction flags at 4.0 average and two of them correct.
Sunday's early game gives Southampton their return to the road. They were the most-flagged Championship side in the spring record, five flags at 6.4 average with three wins, and both misses were draws rather than defeats, including the only 7.0+ fixture in the entire record that ended level. Watford's two spring flags, at 4.2 average, both failed. How those five Southampton calls settled, factor by factor, is the kind of working the accuracy page exists to show.
How can I watch the Championship opening weekend?
Every opening-weekend EFL fixture, across the Championship, League One and League Two, is live on Sky Sports+, with Wolves v Blackburn the Friday night broadcast pick. League One and League Two both start on Saturday 15 August; the National League starts a week earlier, on Saturday 8 August.
When will the model score these fixtures?
Close to kickoff, once team news and rest profiles are in. Every fixture is scored in the tool, and anything reaching 7.0 conviction that week is published in the weekly conviction roundup on the Thursday before the round. Pre-season conviction scores do not exist on purpose: the model reads played matches, and none have been played. What the record gives you today is the shape these 21 clubs left behind in May. The opening weekend is where we find out how much of it survived the summer.
Figures from Lower League Analyst's settled-fixture record, 14 April to 25 May 2026, 192 fixtures across four divisions. Fixture list and kick-off times per the EFL's 25 June release as published by Sky Sports and World in Sport, checked 23 July 2026. Lower League Analyst is not a bookmaker and does not take bets.
