How to read this
xG is the total quality of chances a team has created; xGA is the quality of chances it has allowed. xGD is the gap between the two. A positive xGD means a side is creating better chances than it gives away.
The xG table can differ from the league table because goals depend on finishing and goalkeeping, which swing a lot over short spells. A team well above its xG may be riding hot finishing; a team below it may be unlucky.
xG is one of the eight factors in our conviction score, alongside league position, form, home and away record, head-to-head, goals, injuries and fixture difficulty.
Championship xG FAQs
What is xG in football? Expected goals (xG) measures the quality of the chances a team creates. Each shot is given a value between 0 and 1 based on how often similar chances are scored, and those values are added up for the match.
How is the Championship xG table calculated? We add up xG for and xG against for every Championship club across league matches this season where xG is available for both sides. Goals in the table come from those same matches, so goals minus xG compares like with like.
How often is it updated? Daily. xG is usually published a few days after each match, so the most recent round can take a few days to appear.
Where does the data come from? Match statistics from our data provider, updated daily once xG is published a few days after each match.
